Protecting your pipes in the winter
1- Insulate all pipes using insulation.
2- Ensure that all cracks & holes are sealed with caulk or insulation.
3- Disconnect hoses from hose bibs and install insulating covers over the bibs.
4- Keep exterior entryways and garage doors(unheated spaces) closed as much as you can.
5- Leave cabinet doors open where the pipes are exposed to the exterior walls.
6- When there is extreme cold, let faucets drip.
7- Install a water leak detection system, available at your plumbing supply store, which will alert someone in your household if a water leak is detected.
If extreme cold is called for and your home will not be occupied, shut off the water supply.
